By The Hays Daily News
DODGE CITY — Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ soccer coach Darryl Wellbrock knows his team, which is predominantly made of freshman and sophomores, has a long way to go. But after Thursday’s 2-0 win over Class 6A Dodge City, its obvious the Monarchs are headed in the right direction.
“This is the first time we’ve ever beaten — since I’ve been coaching and I think in the whole girls’ history — that we have beaten a 5A or 6A school,” Wellbrock said. “It may be one of the biggest upsets for the boys’ or the girls’ side.”
TMP led 1-0 at halftime after a goal by sophomore Bailey Hageman in the 18th minute, assist by freshman Megan Koenigsman. The Monarchs made it 2-0 when sophomore Racheal Hamel found junior Alyssa Keil in the 49th minute.
Freshman goalie Deonna Wellbrock recorded six saves in the shutout victory for TMP.
The Monarchs are now 2-1 this season, their only loss coming to Hays High in the opener, 1-0 in overtime. Coach Wellbrock noted that this is the first winning record start for the Monarchs in his five years as head coach of the girls’ team.
“I don’t think they were even competitive with these bigger schools in year’s past,” Coach Wellbrock said. “For us just to compete with these schools is awesome, but to go out and win one 2-0 is very exciting. The girls, they are improving every week.”
TMP will travel to Wichita on Monday for a game with Independent, which it beat 10-0 on April 3 in Hays. The Monarchs will also play at Garden City on Tuesday.
