The Thomas More Prep-Marian swimming meet got a little more than halfway completed before it was called off for lightning Tuesday at the Fort Hays State University pool.
The TMP Invitational included just the Monarchs and Hays High School, so schools didn't have to travel far to return home. But it was still a letdown.
"Between setting everything up and trying to get everything organized, it's a little disappointing," said TMP swimming coach David Adams.
Adams said the lightning detecter at the meet was malfunctioning, so they checked with the Center for Health Improvement, who also had one. Adams was alerted there was lightning in the area, and with radar showing a long line of thunderstorms, Adams decided it was best to call it off then.
"I had them call us back if it went off again, and it did," Adams said. "If you're looking for a 30-minute wait time and another 30 minutes, you could wait four hours before we could go."
Adams said he wasn't sure what the procedure was with KSHSAA if a swimming meet was canceled halfway through, so he wanted to wait until after he spoke to a KSHSAA official before he released results.
