Area Game of the Week: Thunder Ridge at Hill City
By CONOR NICHOLL
HILL CITY -- Cade Rietzke and Mike Yoxall have been best friends since kindergarten, a duo that often played backyard football together. Rietzke played quarterback and Yoxall was his favorite receiver.
"We would always be teaming up, just me and him," Rietzke said, "Just about anything we could do. He knew what I was going to do, I knew what he was going to do. We knew what each other was going to do."
Years later, that tandem continues to work. Now seniors for Kensington-Thunder Ridge, Rietzke and Yoxall have delivered big numbers all season, especially Friday night in a 40-38 road loss to Hill City. Thunder Ridge scored a touchdown but missed the tying two-point conversion with no time left.
"They all played their guts out tonight," Thunder Ridge head coach Jerry Voorhees said. "Every single one of them. I am very proud of all of them. Congratulations to Hill City. They have got a great football team. The bad thing is somebody has to lose these games. Tonight it was us."
Still, Rietzke, who Voorhees said "threw the living crud out of the football tonight," finished with 19-of-35 passing for 371 yards and six touchdowns, all career highs. In addition, he intercepted two passes and rushed for a team-high 81 yards.
The 5-foot-8, 157-pound Yoxall tallied career-highs for catches (nine), yards (186) and tied his personal best with two TD catches (60 and 69 yards).
Hill City entered Friday ranked second in scoring defense in Eight-Man, Division I, allowing just six points a contest. Yet Yoxall's speed forced the Ringnecks to change their defense. Normally, junior quarterback Reggie Jordan does not play defense. Yet no Hill City player could cover Yoxall, so Ringneck head coach Chris Shank brought in Jordan at corner.
"It's a testament to him on how good of a receiver he is," Shank said. "We have tried to avoid having Reggie play defense at all costs. I like to platoon as much as I can. It's a testament to how good of an athlete he is. We tried to cover him in other ways. Our last resort was okay, Reggie, just man him up, man up our fastest kid against their fastest kid."
Thunder Ridge's loss dropped the Longhorns to 4-3 overall, 1-2 in District 7, while Hill City improved to 6-1, 3-0, its' best start since 1996. Thunder Ridge was effectively eliminated from the playoff race with the defeat, yet Rietzke and Yoxall have put up some of the state's best numbers.
In a 54-8 loss to Hanover in Week 1, Thunder Ridge didn't complete a single pass. After that, the Longhorns spread out their offense and started passing more. Rietzke, who Shank called the best quarterback Hill City has seen since Ashland's Corey Stebens in Week 1, has completed 52-of-89 passes for 1,197 yards and 22 touchdowns versus 1 interception. He passed for 826 yards and 13 TDs in 10 games last season.
"I couldn't have any better quarterback than him," Yoxall said.
Yoxall, the No. 2 wideout last year with 16 catches, has 24 receptions for 645 yards and 10 scores this fall. In addition, sophomore Blane Hrabe has 17 catches. Thunder Ridge has averaged over 40 points a game since Week 1.
"I love it. Way better," Yoxall said of the new passing game. "I have been playing more and making big plays pretty much. I have made more bigger plays this year than all of my other years."
"It's a lot of fun," Rietzke said. We are a lot better, I think."
Yoxall is one of multiple Thunder Ridge students that have been adopted by Kensington families. Two years ago, all-state linebacker Randall Irving found success in a foster home. Jeff Yoxall, Kensington's superintendent, adopted Mike. He and Rietzke became friends from an early age and developed a strong bond.
'We both have a lot of fun out there, a lot of joking, but we can get serious at the same time, like tonight," Rietzke said.
The two gave Thunder Ridge an 8-6 lead early in the first quarter when Rietzke threw deep down the right sideline. Yoxall easily outran the Hill City defensive back and gathered in the 60-yard TD.
"I got that guy beat pretty good," Yoxall said.
Late in the third quarter, Yoxall and Rietzke tied the game at 32. On 3rd-and-25, Rietzke faced pressure on his own 11-yard line. He threw deep to Yoxall, who outsprinted Hill City sophomore Adam Pfeifer and hauled in the 69-yard TD catch.
"I saw him out there," Rietzke said. "I saw him that he was open. I just had to put it out there in front of him. He can run underneath it. He is fast enough, Just kind of threw it up to him deep enough so the defender couldn't get it."
"I didn't even see that until the last second," Yoxall said. "Got lucky on that one."
On the final drive, Rietzke completed six passes, including three on slants to Yoxall. It's play that Yoxall said has worked "all year." Yoxall would slant toward the right sideline and haul in the pass.
"There on that last drive, they were playing way off because they didn't want to give up nothing deep," Voorhees said. "We ran that play pretty consistently down the field, either to his side or the tight end's side. Cade has got good timing. We work on it everyday with our receivers and Cade. They got good timing with each other. They trust each other. Did a good job."
"He is quick enough and I have got a good enough ball that I can just hit him on the run. Get all of the yards we can," Rietzke said.
The final catch for the duo moved the ball to the Hill City 5 with 16 seconds left. Two plays later, Rietzke tied the game on a 5-yard pass to Hrabe. The Longhorns missed the two-point conversion and lost the game -- but the longtime best friends still continued a terrific year.
"He is a heckuva kid, great quarterback and great leader for us," Voorhees said. "...(Mike), he has really turned into a dang good football player. Very proud of him."
I also am a Goldbug and proud to be! But when I go back to my hometown, and when I see someone wearing Thunder Ridge shirt, I don't hesitate to think....Gooooo LONGHORNS!! I now think of the Longhorns as my mascot. Some of my best friends graduated as Mustangs. And they are pleased with the two schools combining! By reading some of these responses, it looks like the students are more mature than some of the adults. There must be something in their hearts they can't get over from the past. I hope they let go their anger and hope they can get into the current time. "Changes" are a part of life. This is very small issue and sure be easily moved on. There is more things in life than keeping anger in someone's heart. Try losing your mother, who is your best friend, or anyone you truly love. Of course, I had anger in my heart, but I've let go and have peace. I hope you can too. There is more to life than holding on to anger. Let God, Let Go!

This is retarded. The newspaper tried to write an article about my teammates and you people have to start arguing about the consolidation, Smith center, our coach's grammar, our water tower, our signs, and god knows what else? Really? Grow up. We have. we're all friends. The consolodation is over. We are, Longhorns!

This article is about our 8-man football team in a small town. I don't understand how all of this started. We currently go to Thunder Ridge High School. And we aren't having any problems. We get along. And are doing good. Our numbers are doing fine. We have many numbers of children coming up from the junior high next year. If you chose to go to different schools, thats fine. It's your decision. I don't understand how you can post comments, but you don't want people to know who you are.If you have problems with it, you should of done something about it at the time. We consolidated, it's over and done with. Good job to Cade and Mike, and the rest of the team!

Consolidation: 10/31/2009
I graduated from Kensington and am extremely proud of it. Kensington is a great town and I am confused as to why people are nitpicking at the color of our watertower. The watertower has nothing to do with the school and how the community runs. I would also like to say that I ENJOY coming home to watch THUNDER RIDGE play. I have no hard feelings with this consolidation, I have more hard feelings with these comments. Most of these people are looking at this situation as an outsider. I would like to say congratulations to Thunder Ridge and their football season.

To those of you who are still struggling with the consolidation, I have one point to make. Ask yourselves how bad Jennings, Morland, Lenora, and Herndon feel when they have nothing. What would they would have given to have had a neighbor to share with and still have schools in their communities. I have been through a school closing in my lifetime and know exactly how it feels. I proudly graduated from Kensington as a GOLDBUG and still support Thunder Ridge with no hesitation.

Whining and crying: 10/30/2009
Oh my lord. In any situation you never going to make everyone happy, you do what is necessary. Whether or not the consolidation was done right or wrong, at this point who cares. You make the best of the situation handed to you. There comes a time when you just go on, and this case wouldn't it be better for the kids. These TR kids have picked up and gone on, my son being one of them. The kids live it everyday, leave them alone. Shut up about it, i wasn't thrilled about it either, but i realized quickly that i didn't try to stop it or change. And for those of you who want to continue to whine or cry, you should have done something about it at the time. You didn't...shut up. You terrorize the kids of this school district with your bad attitudes. If you don't like it leave. This article was about a high school football team. Not Smith Center, not Kensington and not Agra. For god's sake no wonder sc, ktown and agra have this reputation....hello...its not anyone else its you whiners and criers. That can't get over some injustice that you think was done to you personally. It wasn't. Let or kids go on with their day to day as TR students, cuz it's not going to change in the immediate future.

To those of you who commented about what this story is REALLY about, (and that's the CURRENT TR football team and their efforts) Thank you. I bet the kids mentioned in the article really appreciate being acknowledged and supported. To those who commented just to use this article as a #@#$% session, GROW UP ALREADY. I graduated from EH, and ALSO GREW UP in K-town, and currently reside there. AND AFTER READING SOMEOF THESECOMMENTS, I'm asshamed to be assiciated with ALL of you, INCLUDING KIRWIN! The consolidation is done and over with. We ALL know that there was no way to make everyone happy, and I am aware that there were things done ON ALL THREE sides that should have been done differently, but IT's DONE. Get OVER it, and start supporting what we have left of our communities. All this childish bickering is why are communities are dying to begin with. Would YOU want to move here? I never knew people between the ages of 35 and 80+ could be so childish. I hope things change before our kids learn the wrong attitudes to have, or before we lose our towns entirely. Congrats to the TR Longhorns and good luck in your remaining games. Please keep in mind that TRUE Sportsmanship is what LIFE is all about, REGARDLESS of the outcome of the game (and life).

For those wondering about the signs that still remain near Kensington, here is a thought. Although Kensington and Agra are now the homes of Thunder Ridge Longhorns (more powere too ya!), they are still the homes of the Mustang and Goldbug graduates forever. The signs should stay up till they rot for that reason.

I am a Kensington High School graduate and proud to always be a Goldbug, but (although I no longer live there) am also proud of the students at Thunder Ridge. Instead of dwelling on the past and what some (obviously) perceive as a wrong that was done, why can't the focus be the students that make up Thunder Ridge and the positive that they have made out of the consolidation. It's over and done with, it's time to grow up and move on to something else.

I am a Kensington graduate. I would just like to thank the students who go to TR and get along with each other. It has never been the students....always the parents fighting. The next comment will probably be something about segregation of EH and Ktown students because Ktown students are better or something. If you chose Pburg that's great...if you chose TR that's great too. My point is that this 8-man football team is successful right now because of EH and Ktown boys. Boys who are getting along....no matter the original mascot, color, town, or parents. They are winning together.....you can't tell me all of the parents don't enjoy the wins. Come on people! What type of message are you sending to your kids? Do you want them to be hateful people when they graduate and go to college?? Trust me....they won't make it far if they do.

This is a story about a football game. When i went to read the comments i was thinking i would read some comments about TR's season and other 8-man teams. Turns out i got to read a bunch or stories from parents who have to get on the internet to rag on a school and a community. If you don't like it you can go to another school and i know some people have chose to do that. This is an article about the accomplishments of a small town football team, why do we have to turn it into an article about the consolidation? Regardless of all this i think people should realize this is simple an article about a football team.

The Kensington Goldbug signs are outside the town of Kensington because it is fair. Has no one ever been to Rock Hills High School? Mankato memorabilia still fills the halls. I would venture to guess that most of the people commenting on this still support their alma mater, correct? That is all they are doing. If Easten Heights wants to keep their sign up, power to them, but just because Kensington kept their sign up does not mean they are the bad guy.

This is something I have noticed also. Why is there still a big goldbug sign on both the west and east sides of your town? It's way past time to put the goldbug stuff away, but I would venture to guess that you will never do that. and your water tower will be black and gold until the day you die. You have not fooled everyone into thinking that you actually care about another town besides yours.

SC didn't have a ridiculously enormous scholarship program to share with Ktown either. $3 million dollars was another good reason to rush rush rush. Barta can probably at least compose an intelligent sentence. "Threw the crud out of the ball"? "Played their guts out"? This, coming from a man who made many, many phone calls trying to recruit kids to the new TR district. The folks behind the consolidation are happy with the outcome and that's fine. The rest of us will move on and be content with our successes in other district. These people are hypocrites. Oh, by the way they do have their own newspaper!!! It's called the Constitutional Free Press Gazette! Check it out. What a hoot.

You're right. Two communities got to keep their school. The other community was kicked in the pants and you didn't care. You got what you wanted and didn't care how you had to do it. It was simply a case of bullying. It's no wonder bullying occurs in schools. The kids watch their parents do it. The day will come when your town will get kicked around too.

I have no hard feeelings for SC. Quite the opposite as a matter of fact. It is a good town with good people and good programs. However all towns want to keep their school as long as possible. With the consolidation two communities kept their schools for the time being.

Hey K-town it sounds like you would like to be a county seat town. Maybe you could build some factories, build a courthouse, and start some new businesses. Then maybe you could try to get the county seat away from Smith Center. And you could also start your own newspaper and have your own printing press. I'm sorry you have such jealous feelings for SC. Why are they such a threat to you?

K-town: 10/24/2009
I've been viewing the comments on this story every day and must say this is some of the most intersting feedback ever read on a story. Having had a couple of experiences with K-towners in the past, I and my wife can vouch for the fact that this is typcial K-town behavior: get what you want, no matter how you have to get it. No matter what toes you have to step on or who you have to kick around, it's always all about K-town and what's best for them. Then they brag about it and wear it like a badge of honor.

consolidation: 10/24/2009
To K-town Booster: Recent history also proves that K-town does not care about any other community. Just ask Kirwin about this. From what we've been told, the only reason the building in Agra is open is because K-town needs the gym. If you have so many kids in Junior High right now, why are you having such a difficult time finding a basketball coach for them? For 3 weeks, the ad has been in all of the local papers about how you need a head and assistant position filled. Maybe I should apply. K-town only cares about themselves. Period.

It appears to me that Smith Center and K-town are just two of a kind. Only SC is bigger and is a county seat. The only way K-town was going to survive was to suckup to people west of them. It worked to your advantage for the time being. We'll see what happens in the future. You can only be independent for so long. There are no more little schools beside you. Good luck

I am glad your child is doing fine in Phillipsburg. This was a decision every parent had to make for themselves and their child. Good luck. However the new school system has a play and a very good computer lab and does offer the other items. Again good luck and their are no hard feelings towards the families that went west.

Consolidation: 10/23/2009
To K-town Booster: Why don't you ask the town of Kirwin about closing school buildings? They were told that their building would remain open for at least the 3 years of the consolidation financial package from the state legislature. What did K-town do to them? They slammed their doors closed ASAP before the ink was even dry on the papers. Let's not dodge the facts. The state board of education advised both the K-town and Eh board members to give this at least a full year before taking it to an election so all the facts would be out in the open and all patrons would be in formed. The state BOE was informed of this in the month of January, and by May it was up on the ballot on a special election. Rush rush rush. Get it pushed through before everyone has the facts; and before new board members could come on and inform the public of what was going on. I think we all know what really happened. EH simply saved K-town from SC, and they didn't care how they had to git-r-dun. Why do you think so many of our kids went west to Phillipsburg? Guess we just weren't "feelin' the luv" from K-town.

Consolidation: 10/23/2009
To the Thunder Riddge fan: I am one of the Eastern Heights parents who chose to send my children west to Phillipsburg rather than east to Kensington. They are doing very well and are getting a good education, and they don't have to worry about having enough kids for a football team or a school play or a volleyball team or a dance team, etc. etc. They also have a great computer lab where they're learning great things. The list goes on and on. If the consolidation would've been done honestly, you would have gotten my children, but as parents, we refused to be a part of this.

Football Story: 10/23/2009
We have relatives who live in eastern Phillips County. When their local school district called Eastern Heights ended up consolidating with a school in Smith County by the name of kensington, they told us how this all took place. Over half of the E. Heights board of education members were hoodwinked and swindled into this. They were promised many things by the Kensington board and chose to believe it. During this process, some of the E. Heights board members were voted off by their patrons and were replaced. Unfortunately, it was too late, and the consollidation vote happened by way of a quickly rushed special election. The State Board was contacted by a large amount of E. Heights patrons to inform them of this atrocity that was taking place. The State board smelled a rat and called the election off for a month. Until a certain State Senator from Kensington got involved and applied pressure to the state board members. The rest is history. Hays Daily, if you really want a true story of what's behind this new school district, this is it.

consolidation: 10/23/2009
When the consolidation happened the communities knew that we would be smaller at first however we had 27 out for junior high football. Numbers are coming. Reason Kensington did not go east is past history. Smith Center history shows they do not care about the other community. It closes the doors to the other school and lets that town die. Ask Lebanon and Gaylord abot this.

To thunder Ridge fan. having one Smith Center person in a vehicle not waving at you does not necessarily reflect the environment in that town. Just like you said that only haveing 16 on your FB team does not necessarily reflect the entire enrollmnet of your school. You are full of anti-Smith Center feelings, and I feel sorry for you. If you don't like what's in the Smith County Pioneer, then do n't read it. Start your own Kensington newspaper. And if you have so many alumni coming back here, what are they doing for jobs? my bet is that many of them have jobs in Smith Center-the town you don't seem to have much love for.

Dear Smith Co Resident, if you have that many kids in some of your elem classes, i would hope you have split those classes into two groups and have a certified teacher for each. If not, your student/teacher ratio is way out of balance and those kids are not getting the attention they need and will suffer for it. not talking about a bunch of "paras' here; talking about actual certified teachers. how sad that you have such hateful envious feelings towards your neighbors in your own county. Losses- Apparently you've never been to SC before.. or even Smith County for that matter. There has been a large amount of animosity there for many years, and some New Yorker writing a book about it won't change a thing. However, if one were to visit SC try waving at every car you meet. I can guarantee that if you get someone to wave back it is either because they are from Kensington or Athol, or they are out of state. If their town is so friendly and built on such love wouldn't the simplest gesture be a kind wave? Also- if TR is about winning, try picking up the Smith County Pioneer sometime and seeing their winning streak plastered all over every headline. Who's all about winning now? 16?!- The high school classes at TR are smaller because of the dwindling enrollment. However, many alumni have settled back in the area, and promoted the consolidation. I know that some of the classes in the elementary have 25 to 30 kids. These numbers prove a successful consolidation. Also- 16 boys out for an extra-curricular activity doesn't necessarily reflect the entire enrollment.

After viewing the previous comments it sounds like Thunder Ridge is all about winning games. It also sounds as if your goal in life is to see SC lose. SC will go on no matter whether they lose or win ballgames. With only 16 boys on a FB team it sounds as if TR may not. According to Joe Drapes book about SC it's all about respecting each other, then liking each other, then loving each other. Only then will we all be champions in all facets of life; not just on a football field. It's time to love one another.

Why did Thunder Ridge only have 16 boys suit up last Friday night if you've just recently been through a school consolidation? You shuold have higher numbers than that. Smith Center fan: It sounds as though you are upset because you didn't receive Kensington's students in a county consolidation. That is why nobody in West Smith County wanted to go to SC, because you all sound like that. You really need to worry about your loss coming in a couple weeks and all the games you'll be losing next season. Hill City fan: The reason you don't have any stories on your team is that you are essentially an 11-man school playing 8-man. You were supposed to win, you have nearly 40 players on your team. I believe Thunder Ridge suited up 16 players last Friday night and nearly beat Hill City. I'm pretty sure that nobody from Thunder Ridge asked to have a story about them. The news wanted to write a story about a true 8-man school.

After reading these postings on the Kensington story, one would assume that they just went through a consolidation. one would also assume that the afterburning effects are tension-filled. My advice to anyone involved in a small school: enjoy it while you can because the day is soon coming when they will be extinct.

Nice story, but if the Kensington kids would've gone to Smith Center, they would be a vital part of the successful Barta program and would have been accepted very well. But instead, 2 little schools (Kensington and Eastern Heights) went together and will still struggle for numbers. The state could have kept this from happening, but they chose not to. And now the state is yelling because there's not enough money for education. What's wrong with this picture?

While we've all read plenty of stories on Kensington, I would like to see a story on Hill City and their success this year. If this is their first year of making the playoffs, get to the heart of it and write a nice humanitarian story for us HDN readers.
