Area volleyball: Hill City, Hoxie headed to state

OBERLIN – For the first time since 2005, the HIll City High School volleyball team will head to the Class 2A state tournament.
The Ringnecks rolled through the Class 2A Oberlin sub-state with wins against Rock Hills, host Oberlin-Decatur Community and
Smith Center on Saturday to advance to this week's 2A finale in Emporia.
Hill City moved to 35-4 on the year, defeating Smith Center, a 2A qualifier a season ago, 25-20, 25-17. Smith Center defeated Ellis in the semifinals Saturday in three sets, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17.
Class 1A Division I
At WaKeeney, top-seeded Hoxie punched its ticket to this week's state tourney in Hays with a 25-19, 25-7 victory against Logan in the title match. Hoxie and Logan were the top two seeds and received first-round byes. Hoxie enters state with a 36-2 record.
In St. John, Victoria finished as sub-state runner-up as host St. John qualified for the state finale. Victoria defeated Fairfield in the semifinals, 25-15, 25-15, before falling to the Tigers in the title match, 25-16, 25-12. The Knights finished their season at 19-13.
At Stockton, the host Tigers finished sub-state runner-up behind Pike Valley, 25-22, 25-21. Stockton defeated Osborne and Southern Cloud in the first two rounds, but ended its season at 20-16 with the loss. Pike Valley enters state at 20-15 after knocking off top-seeded Thunder Ridge, 25-17, 20-25, 25-12 in the semifinals. Thunder Ridge finished 28-9.
Class 1A Division II
Both Weskan and Wheatland-Grinnell will be headed to Hays after winning their respective sub-states Saturday. Weskan won the Brewster sub-state with a 29-27, 25-16 win against Wallace County in the title match. Weskan was the No. 2 seed behind the Wildcats, and moved to 26-12 with the state-tourney berth. Wheatland-Grinnell won the Dighton sub-state as the top seed, defeating the host in the title match. Wheatland-Grinnell is 29-9.
At Wilson, the host school won 25-21, 11-25, 25-23 win against Beloit-St. John's/Tipton in the title match.
