Hays High's Hearld named WAC player of the year

Hays High School junior pitcher Hannah Hearld was named the Western Athletic Conference player of the year for the 2014 softball season, joining two of her teammates on the first team.

Hearld went 17-2 in 23 games played this season, helping guide the Indians to an 18-5 record and berth in the state tournament in Manhattan, where they fell to Kapaun Mount Carmel, 7-6, in the quarterfinals. Hearld allowed 77 hits this season, 26 earned runs and struck out 181 batters with a 1.517 earned run average.

She also led the team with 41 hits, including seven doubles and eight home runs with 34 runs batted in.

Joining Hearld on the first team All-WAC are sophomore third baseman Tessa Stickel and senior catcher Haley Wells. Wells was second on the team with 37 hits and led the team with 27 runs, Stickel third with 35 hits and second on the team with 22 RBIs.

Hays High also had two players named honorable mention All-WAC in junior utility player Kaylie Schoendaller and senior outfielder Julie Balzer.
