ELLIS – Plainville High School senior Dylan Wiesner, a Class 3-2-1A state champion this winter, had talked often with Joe Renfro when the coach was at Labette Community College.
This year, Renfro took over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and restarted the program after a two-decade hiatus. Renfro led the Golden Norseman to the junior college national championship, the third of his coaching career.
“Great coach,” Wiesner said.
Wiesner had planned on committing to Renfro when he was at Labette, but when Renfro went to NEO, Wiesner recently decided to commit to the Golden Norsemen.
Wiesner finished 37-2 and rolled to a state crown at 170 pounds this season. At the state tournament, he won three matches by fall and his second match by technical fall. Wiesner also finished as a state runner-up as a junior.
“They are going to go into next season ranked No. 1,” Wiesner said. “I feel that’s the best place that I can go to win a national championship, and then hopefully move onto the bigger rankings and the Division I level.”
As well, Plainville senior high jumper Sami Reif has committed to Fort Hays State University for track. Reif tied for sixth in Class 2A with a 5-0 mark last spring, and also finished 13th as a freshman.
Reif has battled injury and started slowly this season, including a 4-10 mark and fourth place finish at Tuesday’s Ellis Invitational.
“Sometimes Sam is a slow starter,” coach Norma Finnesey said. “We haven’t had good days for our jumpers to get in a lot of practices, but I think as the season progresses, she is going to be where she needs to be. She knows what it takes.”
Cardinal senior standout Hadley Gillum, a two-time Hays Daily News Player of the Year, led Plainville to a Class 2A runner-up finish this winter. Gillum has not made a college choice.
“A bunch of jucos have talked to me and then Fort Hays has talked to me a little bit,” Gillum said. “I am just kind of waiting a little bit, thinking on it, talking to family and other people, hopefully make the decision pretty soon.”
While some players and coaches rule out junior colleges, Gillum is contemplating first starting out at a two-year school.
“That is one thing I am thinking about just what I want to do first,” he said. “If I want to go two years, and then possibly have a chance at Division I, trying to figure that out.”
