Area golfers qualify for state

WaKEENEY -- The WaKeeney-Trego High School boys' golf team won the Class 1A Regional at Big Creek Golf Course on Monday. The Golden Eagles shot a 332, while Atwood-Rawlins County was second with a 367 and Sharon Springs-Wallace County finished third with a 390. Senior Cameron Staples shot a 79 to lead Trego and finished second overall.

Individually, Ransom-Western Plains junior Chad Ryersee, Winona-Triplains freshman Ryan Gfeller, Quinter junior Ryan Tebow and Hoxie freshman Dayde Mader all qualified.

At the Class 2A Ellis Regional, Oberlin won with a 327, while Ellis was second with a 333 and Ness City third with a 362. Individually, Smith Center's Payton Buckmaster (82) and Zach Linn (85) qualified individually, along with Plainville's Chase Meitler (89), Colton Bobek (92) and Craig Garvert (92).

Only three golfers broke 82 -- Ellis junior Skyler Tebo (72), Oberlin freshman Kade Brown (73) and Oberlin senior Kade Brown (74).

At La Crosse, Bird City-Cheylin finished second as a team and La Crosse was third in the sand greens regional. Tipton Catholic won with a 318, while Cheylin shot a 329 and La Crosse shot 333. The Leopards tied with Sylvan-Lucas, but won on a tiebreaker. Ruben Razo led the Cougars with an 80, while La Crosse's Derrick Depperschmidt led his team with an 80.

At Riley County, two Downs-Lakeside golfers qualified -- Shayne Renken (79) and Dylan Frazier (92).
