DENVER -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team won two of three during its season-opening weekend against Metropolitan State University of Denver.
The Tigers fell 13-12 in 10 innings in the opening game of their doubleheader Friday but rebounded with a 10-4 win Friday and 10-6 win Saturday.
In the Tigers' loss, Metro State outfielder Jeff Levett hit a walkoff 2-RBI home run to win it.
FHSU actually led from the seventh inning until the tie-breaking home run. FHSU even scored a run in the top of the 10th with an RBI single by designated hitter Nathan Miller, but Levett's home run overtook that lead.
The next two games were all Tigers.
FHSU's bats went crazy in both games, as the Tigers hit 13 of 32 in Game 2 on Friday and 17 of 42 Saturday.
In Game 2 on Friday, senior right fielder Ryan Busboom finished 3 of 3 at the plate with four runs scored, and senior Tayler Davis (1-0) pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits, three walks and four runs -- none earned.
On Saturday, junior center fielder Clayton Garland led FHSU offensively, hitting 4 of 6 and recorded an RBI and three runs scored.
Senior pitcher Jesse Hart relieved starter Robert VanCourt in the second inning. Hart pitched the remaining 7.1 innings and allowed three hits, three walks and two runs -- one earned -- while striking out four.
