The Fort Hays State University baseball team rode the momentum of a five-run seventh inning to defeat Wayne State College 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Larks Park.
The Tigers (25-19) swept the two-game series with Wayne State (26-16) after also winning 5-3 Saturday.
On Sunday, FHSU got two solid pitching efforts from senior Andy Lewton and junior Jesse Hart.
Lewton went four innings and allowed two runs, four hits and three walks while striking out two, while Hart (4-1) earned the victory, pitching five shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks and striking out two.
The game was tied 2-2 after four innings until the Tigers went on a tear in the seventh.
After a walk with the bases loaded, FHSU went up 3-2. Then senior center fielder Brandon Hoefler hit an RBI single, and junior catcher Jay Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Senior designated hitter Anthony Salinas and junior second baseman Chris Santoscoy followed with RBI singles to extend the Tigers' lead to 7-2.
The sweep against Wayne State has given FHSU six wins against regionally-ranked opponents and four wins in a row -- one off the team's season high.
