WICHITA -- The Hays High School baseball team split its road doubleheader with Kapaun Mt. Carmel on Friday.

The Indians won 6-3 in Game 1, but fell 8-3 in Game 2.

Hays High (5-1) got its offense going after struggling in its previous doubleheader, posting 12 hits in the first game and 11 in the second. Kapaun Mt. Carmel moved to 3-1.

In Game 1, Hays High used its freshmen pitching combo. Marcus Altman (2-0) got the start and lasted five innings, allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Cole Schumacher earned the first save of the year for Hays High, pitching the final two innings and allowing a run on a hit and a walk while striking out two.

Senior shortstop Hayden Hutchison led the Indians at the plate, hitting 3 of 4 with two RBIs, a run scored and two doubles.

Hutchison now has eight doubles this season and is halfway to tying his school record of 16 doubles from last season, and he's not even a third of the way through the regular season yet. Hutchison already owns the career record with 34 -- six better than 2012 graduate Austin Unrein.

In Game 2, Hays High out hit Kapaun 11 to five, but the Indians pitchers struggled with their control, giving up 11 free bases with eight walks and three hit-by-pitches. Meanwhile, Kapaun didn't walk a single Indian batter.

Hays High junior Layne Downing (0-1) started and surrendered six runs, two earned, on four hits, five walks and one hit batter while striking out one.

Senior Chandler Rule came in during the fifth, but struggled in a third inning of work. He walked one and hit two with pitches, leading to two runs. Schumacher relieved him and threw 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out three.

Seniors Zack Legleiter, Jake Sedbrook and Rule each finished with two hits.
