Hays High soccer sees season end at Wichita

WICHITA -- For Indian coach Chris Michaelis, Thursday's loss in the regional title game doesn't diminish the record-breaking season for the Hays High School girls' soccer team.
Hays High (14-5) lost 5-0 to Wichita/Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (17-2) in the championship game of South Central Region 3 of the Class 5-1A State Championships. HHS is now 4-10 in playoff games in program history and 0-4 in regional title games.
"Proud of where we finished up this year, had a great year," Michaelis said. "If I could use two words -- record breaking."
Hays High's 14 wins broke the record for most victories in a single season; the 2005 team finished with 12.
The Indians also set the record for most goals in a season with 42; the old record of 41 was accomplished in 2001.
The team had nine shutouts this year, tying the record set by the 2005 team.
Individually, junior Kelsey Hedlund finished with 13 goals, tying the single-season record set by Emily Disney in 2005.
The Indians were in position to challenge the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season, with 16 entering Thursday's match. But the five goals allowed gave HHS 21 on the season; the record is 19, set in 2000.
In Thursday's game, the Crusaders scored in the 23rd minute and again in the 25th for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Kapaun-Mt. Carmel had two quick goals in the second half, in the 55th and 56th, for a 4-0 lead, then added a goal in the 69th.
"Being on our heels a little bit," Michaelis said of allowing two quick goals twice in the match. "But, as good as they are, they keep the foot down."
Michaelis said his team had trouble containing the Crusaders' quick players.
"I have not seen anybody as fast as they are all year long," Michaelis said. "They passed the ball real well, kept their spacing."
Hays High senior goalkeeper Lindsey Dinkel made four saves. Crusader keeper Michelle McElroy made one save.
