HHS set for Bishop-Carroll

By The Hays Daily News

The Hays High School girls' soccer team will see a rematch of last season's consolation final on Tuesday, as the Indians face Wichita-Bishop Carroll in the Class 5A state quarterfinals at HHS Field.

Last year, Bishop Carroll defeated Hays High 1-0 to take third. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Hays High (15-2-1), the No. 2 seed in the West region, has the same winning percentage as Bishop Carroll (14-1-3), but the Indians earned the higher seed and homefield advantage due to having more wins.

Hays High is riding a swell of momentum and hasn't lost a match since April 8 when the squad fell 1-0 to Junction City, while Bishop Carroll, the No. 3 seed in the West, lost its only match of the season May 3 against Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 1-0. Bishop Carroll also tied Wichita West, Goddard-Eisenhower and Wichita East.

Bishop Carroll has outscored its opponents 68-10, while the Indians have outscored their opponents 48-10.

On Tuesday, Hays High's seniors will have faced Bishop Carroll in the past four post-seasons.

The Indians defeated Bishop Carroll 1-0 in overtime in 2010 in the regional semifinals, but since, they have lost 8-0 in the regional in 2011 and 1-0 in the state consolation semifinals in 2012, which was Hays High's first trip to the state tournament.

It's been another historic season after last year's run.

Hays High is one goal away from setting the new school record for goals in a season, which was set last season. The Indians already set the regular season scoring defense record with nine, and for an entire season, the Indians are eight goals ahead of the previous record of 18 set in 2010.
