HHS swimmers second at Great Bend

GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School girls' swimming team finished second Thursday at the Great Bend swimming meet.

The Indians scored 256 points. Great Bend won it with 403, and Thomas More Prep-Marian placed fourth with 51.5 points.

Hays High senior Courtney Hess provided the highlight of the meet, posting a state consideration time of two minutes and 23.85 seconds in her second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle.

Hays High sophomore Shelbie Berens won the 500-yard freestyle in 7:13.68.

Hays High junior Mackenzie Lewis was second in the 500 in 7:37.85. Senior Courtney Kaba placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:24.97, and the 200-yard freestyle relay, composed of sophomore Emily McPherson, Kaba, senior Jessica Carreira and Hess, placed second in 2:07.05.

Third-place finishes for Hays High included Berens in the 200-yard IM, McPherson in the 50-yard freestyle, Hess in the 100-yard freestyle, senior Arin Straub in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay.
