HHS swimmers third in WAC

GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School girls' swimming team took third at the Western Athletic Conference championships on Thursday at Great Bend.

The Indians finished behind Great Bend and Garden City. Dodge City and Liberal were fourth and fifth.

Hays High senior Courtney Hess led the way for the Indians, taking second in the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, 2.61 seconds. She also was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:18.16.

The 400 freestyle relay, which included Hess, junior Mackenzie Lewis, sophomore Shelbie Berens and sophomore Emily McPherson, finished third in 4:31.23.

Berens was sixth in the 200 IM in 2:53.53 and 100 backstroke in 1:19.18.

The 200 medley relay also took sixth (2:24.41). The relay included Berens, McPherson, senior Arin Straub and senior Courtney Kaba.

With the season over, Hays High awaits seeding for the Class 5-4-3-2-1A state swimming meet. The state meet starts Thursday in Topeka.

Hays High swimming coach Ann Adams said Hess has qualified in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, the 400 freestyle relay has qualified and the 200 freestyle relay has posted a consideration time.
