HHS, TMP swimmers compete at Great Bend

GREAT BEND -- The Hays High School and Thomas More Prep-Marian swimming teams placed ninth and 10th, respectively, Friday at the highly competitive 10-team Great Bend Invitational.

The Indians were ninth with 72 points while TMP was 10th with two points. Manhattan, Andover and Newton finished 1-2-3 with 409, 373 and 343, respectively.

Hays High's top performance came from the 400-yard freestyle relay, composed of senior Courtney Hess, senior Courtney Kaba, sophomore Shelbie Berens and sophomore Emily McPherson. The relay finished eighth and posted an automatic state qualifying time of 4 minutes, 29.48 seconds.

Other top performances came from Hess who placed eighth in the 100 freestyle (1:03.68) and 10th in the 200 freestyle (2:20.41).

Berens placed 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:19:09) and 13th in the 200 IM (2:49.06). Junior Mackenzie Lewis also scored in the 100 backstroke, placing 16th in 1:23.19.

The 200 freestyle relay, composed of Hess, Lewis, junior Alexa Steinkuhler and McPherson, placed 12th in 2:03.71, and the 200 medley relay, which included Lewis, Berens, McPherson and Kaba, was 13th in 2:26.94.

TMP's only scorer came in the 200 medley relay, which placed 18th in 2:44.00. The relay consisted of Penny Chu, Chloe Zimmerman, Cheyenne Ellard and Laura Krug.
