HHS cross country opens season at Great Bend

The Hays High School cross country teams competed Thursday at the Great Bend Invitational.

The boys' team finished fifth with 87 points, and the girls were fifth with 122 points.

The boys' side had two medalists. Senior Derek Drees was third in 17 minutes and 23 seconds, and senior Joshua Brungardt was 11th in 18:23.

Hunter Bizzell, Kendall Kandt and Austin Chambers rounded out the scoring in 20th (19:00), 25th (19:19) and 30th (19:31), respectively.

The girls team finished in a pack. Summer Smith was 21st in 18:48 on the 4,00-meter course, and Mattie Schlaefli was 24th in 18:54.

Haley George, Megan Dinkel and Reagan Kaiser rounded out the scoring in 30th (19:15), 31st (19:17) and 32nd (19:17), respectively.
