Area players in all-star games

Four area players, including three girls, have been selected to play in the annual Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-star games Aug. 6 at Washburn University's Lee Arena in Topeka.
Osborne's Demi French, Colby's Lissa Mazanec and Oakley's Kimber Weiser are the three girls, while Kensington's Ethan Kuhlmann is the boy. French will play on the south team, while Mazanec and Weiser will play for the north squad.
The 5-foot-4 French led Osborne to a fourth-place finish in Class 2A this winter. Osborne's only double figure scorer, French averaged more than 13 points per game and earned second team Class 2A all-state.
Weiser, 5-foot-7, earned first team Class 2A all-state after she helped lead Oakley to the Oberlin sub-state championship game.
Mazanec was a first team Class 4A player. The 6-0 forward paced the Eagles in scoring (13.7 points per game), was second in rebounding (5.7) and averaged two steals and two assists per game. Colby finished fourth in Class 4A after it posted an undefeated regular season.
Kuhlmann is the lone boy. The 6-3 Kensington product will play on the North team that includes Larned's Dennan Morrow, the Mid-State Activities Association leading vote getter, and Frankfort's Jordan Broxterman, a first team Class 2A all-state player.
Kuhlmann was named first team Class 1A after he averaged 27 points per game and led Kensington to the sub-state championship game. A University of Nebraska-Kearney football signee, Kuhlmann, the 2006-07 Hays Daily News basketball player of the year, was first team all-area in football and basketball and also named Kansas' Defensive Player of the Game last weekend in the Kansas vs. Nebraska Eight-Man All-Star Game.
Micaela Gasper of Downs-Lakeside is the only area participant who is earning one of 12 KBCA scholarship awards. She will pick up the KBCA Executive Director Scholarship honor.
