Oberlin wins stacked regional in Lakin

LAKIN -- All season, no favorite has emerged in Class 3-2-1A. At the Class 3-2-1A Lakin regional, the teams, just like the regular season, remained bunched. Oberlin finished first with 134 points, Goodland was second with 133 points, Scott City finished third with 130.5 points and Hoxie was fourth with 121 points. Norton was fifth at 114.5 points and Oakley was sixth at 104.5 points. Thomas More Prep-Marian senior Dylan Schumacher, a three-time defending champion, was named the regional's senior wrestler of the year. At 126, Schumacher went 3-0 with three pins, including a victory in 1:53 against Oberlin sophomore Dayton Dreher in the championship. Oberlin coach Joe Dreher was named the regional coach of the year.
At 106 pounds, Norton sophomore Branson Addington will make his second trip to the state tournament after he won the regional title with a 5-2 victory against Atwood freshman Macrae Migchelbrink. St. Francis sophomore Lane Hoffman took third and Oberlin's Troy Juenemann was fourth.
At 113, Atwood junior John Solko took second and St. Francis junior Casey Keller finished fourth. At 120, Norton junior John Risewick, a former defending champion and state runner-up, won 3-2 in the championship against Scott City junior Alex Kough. Goodland senior Austin Avelar was third and Oakley freshman Taylor Murphy was fourth.
At 126, Schumacher was first, Dreher second, Norton sophomore Alec Hager finished third and Plainville junior Trevor Axelson was fourth.
At 132, Oberlin senior Brent Juenemann lost by fall in 2:54 to Scott City senior Clay Mulligan in the championship. Phillipsburg junior Caleb Studley took third, while Hoxie senior Drew Jones was fourth.
At 138, Hoxie senior Calvin Ochs defeated Phillipsburg sophomore Michael Dusin by fall in 3:32. Oakley senior Levi Hefner took third and St. Francis junior Mikey Leibbrandt was fourth.
At 145, Oberlin junior Kade Brown won the championship when he pinned Ellis junior Gage Younger in 5:47 for the championship. Phillipsburg senior Ross Coomes took third.
At 152, Hoxie senior Dalton Snyder finished first, Goodland sophomore John Peden was second, Plainville sophomore Dylan Weisner was third and St. Francis junior Dylan Wolaver was fourth.
At 160, Oakley senior Eric Albers had four straight pins for the championship. Phillipsburg senior Matt Schneider was second. Hoxie junior Steven Yergey took third, while Norton sophomore Cole Remmer was fourth.
At 170, Ellis senior Riley Hunsicker won the first regional title of his career when he pinned Oakley junior Jason Berkgren in 1:50. Plainville senior Nathan Thyfault took fourth.
At 182, Goodland sophomore Tyler Gastineau took the championship when he pinned TMP senior Scott Heimann in 3:58 in the championship. Heimann won his first two matches in a 17-0 decision and by 6-4 in overtime to earn his first trip to state.
Hoxie junior Brandon Salmans was third and St. Francis junior Zach Geinger took fourth.
At 195, Goodland senior Laine Herl won two matches by fall and another by major decision to claim the title. Oberlin's Jeff Shaw was second, Oakley junior Cody Faulkender was third and Stockton senior Connor Winters was fourth.
At 220, Goodland senior Riley Oharah won the regional title when he pinned Oberlin junior Channing Fortin in 1:32 in the championship. Hoxie junior Kane Washington took fourth.
At 285, Scott City senior Luke Hayes, a defending state champion, pinned his way through the bracket and won the title. Plainville senior Bradey Chard lost to Hayes in the championship. Quinter senior Dustin Zahn will make his first career appearance at state after he took fourth.
Class 3-2-1A at Russell
Smith Center finished second with 159 points at the Class 3-2-1A Russell regional. Hoisington took first with 166.5 points. The Redmen had one first, two seconds, three thirds and a fourth. Russell was eighth with 78.5 points and had one third and three fourths. Kensington-Thunder Ridge had one third place finisher in 220-pound junior Dillon Coomes and Sylan-Lucas had a fourth place finisher in 285-pound sophomore Fitz Berger. For Smith Center, freshman Brody Frieling finished third at 106 pounds, sophomore Clint Rogers was second at 113, junior Zach Fischer was fourth at 138, senior Clay Pickel was second at 152, senior Louis Frazier was third at 170, junior Kyler Atwood was third at 182 and senior Josh McDowell won at 195 pounds. For Russell, sophomore Alex Baldwin took fourth at 113 pounds, junior Regis Weiss was fourth at 145 pounds, and junior Dylan Walker was fourth at 160.
