Area tennis players qualify for state

Norton senior Tawni Griffey led the area with her first-place finish at the Class 3-2-1A regional in Russell.
Griffey swept the competition, improved to 31-0 and qualified for the state tournament on Friday and Saturday in Hutchinson.
Joining her will be junior Taylor Noel (22-3) of Osborne. She went 2-2 and finished sixth at Russell.
In doubles, Phillipsburg seniors Brooke Boyington and Kaitlyn Vogel (19-3) and Russell seniors Abby Dreher and Brooklyn Sidebottom (9-14) qualified.
Phillipsburg's doubles team went 3-1 and placed fifth, defeating Russell's qualifying team in the fifth-place match, 6-3, 6-0.
On Saturday at the Class 5A regional in Valley Center, the matches were delayed by rain and a lighting failure, but two Hays High teams qualified for the 5A state tournament Friday and Saturday in Topeka.
Hays High senior Shelby Dinkel was playing in the fifth-place singles match, while the doubles team of seniors Megan Bird and Janae Gagnon also were competing for fifth.
