SALINA -- Two WaKeeney youngsters won first-place trophies to lead a group of several area top-three finishers in the Kansas State Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships in March.

Kobi Shubert won the boys' 11-year-old division by hitting 24 out of 25 attempts, and Adell Riedel also hit all but one of her 25 tries to win the 12-year-old girls' title.

Shubert was joined in the top three of his division by Victoria's Mason Robbins, who finished third. Also finishing third was Plainville's Taleia McCrae in the 9-year-old girls' division.

Two area runners-up in their respective age categories were Hunter Vaughn from Colby, 9-year-old boys,

and Zoe Schultz, Grainfield, 14-year-old girls.

The 9-, 10- and 11-year-olds shot from 12 feet, while the older three divisions shot from the standard, 15-foot free-throw line.

The state competitors came from all over the state -- having advanced through local, district and regional competitions -- to compete for top Kansas honors at Sacred Heart Junior-Senior High School.

Winners' scores are sent to the K of C Supreme Office in New Haven, Conn., to be entered in the international contest.
