Tigers announce Hall of Fame class

Printer-friendly version

By The Hays Daily News

The Fort Hays State University Athletic Department announced Monday six new inductees to the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame. The individuals will be enshrined Oct. 11 and include Mike Appelhans (track & field), Dennis Edwards (men's basketball), Skip Numrich (football), Casey Seyfert (football, track & field), Garry Sigle (cross country), and Tom Spicer (athletic director/contributor). The individuals are to be inducted at the Eagle Communications Hall of the Robbins Center on Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. They will also be honored at halftime of the Tiger football game between Fort Hays and Missouri Southern State State University later that day.

Appelhans was a member of the Tiger track & field team from 2000 to 2003. A native of Hill City, Appelhans was a 10-time All-American and was the anchor leg of the NCAA Division II National Champion 400-meter relay team.

Edwards was a member of the Tiger basketball team for two seasons, earning All-American honors both years. He still holds the Tigers' single-season scoring record with 806.

Numrich, a Scott City native, played quarterback for the Tigers in 1976 and '77, guiding the Tigers to their only CSIC championship in '76 with a 5-1 conference mark.

Seyfert competed in both football and track & field from 1998 to 2002. A Beloit native, Seyfert earned first-team All-American honors as a defensive lineman during his final football season in 2001. In track & field, Seyfert was a two-time Division II Indoor National Champion in the shot put, and a four-time indoor All-American. He was also a two-time outdoor All-American in the shot put, finishing second in 2000.

Sigle competed in cross country from 1974 to '78, earning two-time NAIA All-American honors. He was an NAIA All-American in outdoor track & field, and a two-time indoor All-American in the 2-mile.

Spicer served as the Tigers' athletic director from 1989 to 2004. During his tenur, Spicer saw two national championship performances (1990-91 women's basketball and 1995-96 men's basketball). Spicer also played football for the Tigers in college in the early 1970's. He is now the athletic director at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo.
