The Thomas More Prep-Marian girls' soccer team was in the unusual position of having to guard against overconfidence in Monday's match against Wichita Word of Life at TMP field.
Earlier this season, the Monarchs win by six goals on the Fire's home field.
The rematch was more of the same. TMP-Marian won by an identical 6-0 score on Monday, with sophomore Emily Volker leading the way with four goals.
"We had beaten them at Word of Life earlier this season," Volker said. "We were confident, but not overconfident."
With head coach Jairo Arias in South Carolina for a nephew's graduation, assistant coach Shawn Lawson tried a couple position changes that worked for the Monarchs. Lawson moved Volker to outside midfielder, giving her room to make runs down the sideline. He also moved senior Adriana Luna from a defensive midfielder position to an attacking midfielder, giving her opportunities to distribute the ball to the forwards.
"That was kind of the plan," Lawson said.
Volker had a hat trick by halftime, scoring all of the Monarchs' goals for a 3-0 lead. She opened the scoring in the 14th minute, receiving a through ball from Luna, with her shot beating Fire junior goalkeeper Samantha Reeves inside the far post.
In the 30th minute, Volker took advantage of Reeves' short goal kick. She won the ball, then fired a shot from 30 yards for a 2-0 lead.
Volker scored in the 32nd when she made a run down the right side, beat a defender and fired a shot from the right side of the box that beat Reeves high inside the far post.
"I usually play center mid, but today I started at outside mid," Volker said. "I can dribble as an outside mid."
That was the plan against a Fire back line that could not contain Volker's runs.
"Teams on our level, nobody on the outside can handle her," Lawson said of Volker.
Volker scored the fourth goal shortly after halftime on a set piece. In the 42nd, senior Therese Campbell served a free kick to Volker in the penalty area, who scored to make it 4-0.
In the 55th, sophomore Rachel Weber made a long run, getting a shot off in the box that slowly trickled toward the goal. Senior Jari Jiminez crashed the net for the goal to make it 5-0.
Senior Mayra Guzman scored the final goal, in the 58th minute. Her shot from the right side at the top of the 18 beat Reeves high inside the far post.
Word of Life (1-9) got off just one shot on goal against senior keeper Sarah Zerr, who was lifted with the lead during the second half; freshman Elizabeth Rupp finished in goal.
TMP-Marian (5-7) won its second straight heading into today's match at Valley Center to end the regular season. A third-year-program, TMP-Marian will participate in the playoffs for the first time, with next week's opener determined at Saturday's seed meeting.
