TMP soccer drops match to Wichita North

Thomas More Prep-Marian girls' soccer coach Darryl Wellbrock doesn't like losing 6-0, but he said it's important to remember his girls have improved.

The Monarchs faced Wichita North, a Class 6A school with an enrollment nine times as large as TMP, and lost by six goals Thursday at TMP Field.

However, it was better than the last two meetings when North mercy ruled TMP 10-0 in 2012 and 2011.

"It's an improvement," Wellbrock said. "That's what I've been looking for."

TMP dropped to 4-7, while North improved to 6-10.

Wellbrock said he thought the score could have been closer, but his squad made a few mental mistakes, allowing North's players to break past the Monarchs' back line.

"They had more depth," he said. "The quickness, you could see the speed up top to get through our defense. The trap worked well several times, but when they did get through with their speed, (goalkeeper Sarah Gustin) had a tough time containing it."

The Monarchs struggled early, allowing North to score four goals in the first half.

TMP slowed North down in the second half. The Redskins didn't add to the score until the final 10 minutes of the match, scoring goals in the 83rd and 84th minutes.

TMP recorded its first mercy rule in program history when it defeated Wichita-Word of Life 10-0 on Monday, and Wellbrock said that might have given his squad a false sense of security at the start of the match.

"I think we came out flat," Wellbrock said. "We weren't going to the ball. We were half a step behind."

The Class 4-3-2-1A regional tournament is scheduled to be seeded Saturday.

Based on his own calculations, Wellbrock said he expected his squad to receive a home match in the first round and expects to face either Class 4A Towanda Circle or Rose Hill.
