TMP starts tournament with win

McPHERSON -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian boys' soccer team started off the McPherson Invitational with a victory.

The Monarchs defeated Maize South 4-2.

Maize South got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Yobani Delgado in the 11th minute, but the Monarchs responded with goals by junior Robert Niyonsaba and senior Carlos Duenes in the 19th minute and 40th minute, respectively.

TMP gave up an own goal in the second half, allowing Maize South to tie it, but the Monarchs scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute. Sophomore Lane Fisher scored off an assist from Duenes.

Senior Rodney Deus scored the final goal with three seconds remaining in the match.

TMP (2-0) will meet Hays High in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday at McPherson.
