Good start for TMP track

RUSSELL -- The Thomas More Prep-Marian track and field teams dominated the field at their season-opening meet on Thursday.

The Monarch boys bested the five-team field with 137.5 points -- 55 better than second-place Hutchinson Trinity. The TMP girls, who recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes in Class 3A the past two season, won with 138 -- 50 better than second-place Hoisington.

On the boys' side, senior Rodney Deus swept his four events, taking home golds in the 100-meter dash (10.88 seconds), 200-meter dash (22.62 seconds), long jump (19 feet, 11 inches) and 400-meter relay (45.38 seconds), which he ran with Nick Schmidt, Cameron Fouts and Jared Schumacher.

Other gold finishes for TMP's boys included Jordan Pfannenstiel in the 110-meter hurdles (18.59 seconds), Sam Dreiling in the pole vault (12-6) and Skyler Urban in the triple jump (38-11).

Like Deus on the boys' side, TMP senior Heather Ruder dominated on the girls' side.

Ruder won the 800-meter run in 2:28.12 and 1,600-meter run in 5:34.28 was a member of the first-place 1,600-meter relay, composed of Ruder, Mikaela Flax, Allison Pfeifer and Samantha Younie, in 4:27.53; and first-place 3,200-meter relay, composed of Ruder, Allison Pfeifer, Kayla Walker and Melissa Pfeifer, in 10:25.36.

Other first-place finishes for TMP's girls included Younie in the 200-meter dash in 27.82 seconds, Flax in the 300 hurdles in 50.09 seconds and Kaylor Gottschalk in the high jump with 4-10.
