While the Building F.A.S.T. project has caused a stir in the community, the debate also has been a topic in the halls of Hays High School.
Athletes, non-athletes, freshmen and upperclassmen all have varied opinions on the issues surrounding the project.
"I think they should (have) fundraised enough money to finish the project in the first place," said Taylor Herman, a junior athlete. "But it should be finished because so much money has already gone into the project. Also, it is good for the athletic program."
Herman isn't the only student who thinks the project should be finished.
"I feel like they should build it because it will be an improvement to the school," senior athlete Luke Madden said. "We should do anything to improve education. With it funded through tax money at least then you know your money is going to something with a purpose."
Use of taxpayer money came up often when speaking to students.
"We should finish it with tax money," freshman athlete Logan Renz said. "Finishing the building would show appreciation to the juniors and seniors who were dedicated to the project."
None of the students interviewed were against the project itself, only the way the building was being funded.
"I don't care if they build the new building, but they should be using that money for repairs to the school," said Kiley Filley, a junior who does not take part in athletics. "It should be privately funded."
Along with confusion on how the project will be funded, some students, mainly underclassmen, don't even know what the building is.
"I don't know anything about the project," said Mackenzie Lewis, a sophomore member of the dance team. "All I know is that it is taking a long time."
