The question supplied a quick response.
"What does it mean to explore?" Tracy Archer asked her second-graders at Lincoln Elementary School in Hays during a Columbus Day lesson Monday.
"To go some place else and look for something new," Allison Weber answered.
The girl and her classmates crafted blue Columbus hats and listened to Archer read a children's book about the famous explorer's sea journey to the Americas. The lesson is part of the curriculum, Archer said.
"According to Common Core standards, all second-graders need to learn about important American symbols," she said.
One student already was familiar with early exploration.
"One thing I know is that the Vikings discovered America first and not Columbus," Meilan Licari said.
Archer said the students would learn how Columbus discovered the New World by mistake and how he adjusted to using different resources.
