An 83-year-old Hays woman rear-ended an SUV on Interstate 70 in Ellsworth County at 2:55 p.m. Wednesday, just east of the Kansas Highway 14 junction.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Joan K. Henry was westbound on I-70 following a 2008 Dodge Caliber driven by Mark G. Rice, 66, Branson, Mo., when an unidentified semi drove onto the shoulder, kicked up dust and reduced visibility.

Rice reportedly applied the brakes and was rear-ended by Henry's 2010 Toyota Highlander.

Henry was not hospitalized, the KHP reported, but Rice and a passenger, Nellie Rice, 64, Branson, were taken to Ellsworth County Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

The KHP said all three involved in the accident were wearing safety belts.
