Owners plan to reopen diner damaged by blaze

Kim Leiker, co-owner of K's Homestyle Diner, 3402 Vine, vows to reopen after Monday's early-morning fire that caused extensive damage.
"Inside, the structure is good," she said Tuesday after being allowed to go inside the building. "We can build over; we plan to renovate again."
The fire was reported at 3:10 a.m. Monday. Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said Monday the Hays Fire Department had called an investigator with the state fire marshal's office. The investigator was on the scene Monday, working with HPD to determine the cause of the fire.
Scheibler said Monday the kitchen appeared to have extensive damage, with smoke damage throughout the rest of the building.
"We know the inside of the building is a complete loss," said Leiker, who owns the business with her sister, Kari Geerdes. "What wasn't burnt was complete smoke damage and water damage. We're OK. We would like to know what happened."
