Hays Middle School celebrates opening
Members of the business community were treated to tours of the recently completed Hays Middle School addition Tuesday morning at a Hays Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting.
The building at 201 W. 29th, opened as Hays Junior High School in 1964. In 1981, the name was changed to Felten Middle School, said Craig Pallister, HMS principal.
The Hays USD 489 Board of Education voted earlier this year for a third name change to Hays Middle School after Kennedy Middle School closed at the end of the 2011-12 school year.
Enrollment is approximately 600 students, and 75 staff members work in the building, Pallister said.
The metal addition added six classrooms and two restrooms.
Terry Ault was the architect, and Paul-Wertenberger was awarded the construction contract in February with a winning bid of $752,600.
"Everybody and everything is new," Pallister said of the school. "We're setting new traditions."
