Longtime Fort Hays State University professor Dick Heil died Saturday in Kansas City at the age of 68.

A memorial service is planned in his honor from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the FHSU Robbins Alumni & Endowment Center.

Heil retired from the university in 2006 after working for the university for nearly 40 years, serving as a professor of political science and department chair.

He also was an active volunteer with the Hays Optimist Club for the last 10 years.

For more information, see Tuesday's Hays Daily News.

I am saddened to hear of Dick's passing. I know his wife Gerri, she has been a dear friend for many years. My sincere sympathy and prayers go out to her and their entire family.
