Proceedings for another Ellis County wind project also received the OK at Wednesday night's Joint Planning Commission meeting.

Clay Gilkerson, a project manager with Invenergy LLC, requested permission to install a meteorological tower to collect data north of Hays.

"You've seen met towers installed south of town," he said. "We'd like to have permission ... from the commission to install a tower north of town."

The tower would be located about 7 miles north of Interstate 70, he said.

The issue was opened for public discussion, but no citizens spoke either in favor or against the project proceedings.

The planning commission then granted approval by a unanimous vote.

Gilkerson said there are about 40 landowners interested in the development, which would be north of Interstate 70 between Hays and Ellis.

The project could span across a 14-mile area, and reaction has been positive to the proposal, which will continue to move forward, he said.

"There is potential out here in Kansas to see some substantial development, and we think that Ellis County is an opportune place to start," Gilkerson said. "That's why we're here."
