Jones not slowing down

It's all still fun for Davy Jones.

At the age of 63, the former teenage heartthrob ("Now I'm a coronary," he jokes) still enjoys performing around the country.

"I do this because I like this," he said Saturday afternoon after a more-than hour-long soundcheck with his band on the Wild West Festival stage and a quick meal at the Kansas National Guard Armory.

Jones was a near last-minute replacement for the Saturday concert when the committee found out Tuesday afternoon that Tommy James and the Shondells had to cancel because James' wife had been hospitalized.

Jones and his band originally were going to appear at a Fourth of July event in Philadelphia but took the opportunity for Hays instead.

"They seem to get a lot of people involved in it. It's very difficult when you've got so many bands," he said of the Philadelphia event. "So it was perfect. We're happy to be here."

The last-minute scheduling didn't phase him at all, either.

"It always feels like last-minute," he said of his usual performance schedule -- leaving one day, performing the next, back home the following day.

"Your body gets used to that, like anything. It's all about conditioning. It's all about how you live your life," he said. "So no, it's not a rush for us."

He performs nearly 30 shows a year, often on the weekends, and has done so -- along with stage, movie and television work and training his race horses -- for the 30-some years since the heyday of the Monkees.

And he shows no sign of wanting to slow down.

"How many guys my age can go out and do this on a weekend, go out on stage and show off?" he said.

"There's no such thing as retirement," he said.
