RUSSELL -- Work will soon begin to reconstruct U.S. 281 (Fossil Street), beginning at East Ninth and ending at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Russell.

Funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the project was submitted by the city of Russell and approved by KDOT engineers to reconstruct a portion of the U.S. 281 corridor. Prime contractor Bryant and Bryant Construction, Halstead, will close a section of Fossil Street in Russell while the project is under construction.

"At the end of this month, we will be rerouting traffic onto a detour," said KDOT Area Three Engineer Kevin Zimmer, whose office will oversee the project.

The estimated cost of the construction project is $228, 457.

Weather permitting, the project should be completed by June 1.
