Work likely will begin soon on the pre-engineered metal building to be built at Felten Middle School.

At the Hays USD 489 Board of Education meeting Monday night, architect Terry Ault said bids for the project are due Jan. 26 and will be presented to the board Feb. 6.

Vice president Darren Schumacher presided at Monday's meeting. President Richard Kraemer and board member Marty Patterson were absent.

The 7,500-squre-foot Felten addition will include six classrooms ranging from 800-to 850-square-feet, similar in size to existing classrooms in the school and two restrooms.

Two of the classrooms closest to the current music rooms "will be planned in the future to remove that wall between those two rooms ... with an eye towards using them for music use," Ault said.

Construction will be scheduled to be completed by Aug. 3, he said.

Superintendent Will Roth said the district is considering an instructional league for the newly combined Hays Middle School. The league would be an enhanced intramural program in volleyball and girls' and boys' basketball for seventh- and eighth-grade students.

"One of the concerns when we talked about combining the two middle schools (was) being able to provide enough opportunity for students to participate," Roth said. "I think this is really an opportunity for students to do that."

In other business, board members:

* Approved offering the drivers education program the same as last year. Each session will be eight days, including three, four-hour classroom sessions and four or five driving days. Cost is $300.
