Hays High School will have one fewer administrator for the 2013-14 school year.

Hays USD 489 Superintendent Will Roth announced at the board of education meeting Monday night that Marty Straub has been named Hays High principal next year.

Straub, who serves as Hays High assistant principal, will succeed Mike Hester, who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

"After discussion with board members and a great deal of administrative discussion, we have decided not to replace the administrative position at Hays High next year," Roth said.

The board discussions came during executive sessions called to discuss personnel matters, Roth said after the meeting.

Eliminating Straub's position will reduce the number of Hays High administrators from four to three.

"The fourth administrator was added a few years ago when our enrollment was 1,100. Now we're back to 800, and we believe that we can cut back there and not do harm to the learning environment to Hays High," Roth said.

Cutting an assistant principal position could result in a cost savings.

Naming Straub to the position early in the year gives him a year to work with Hester transitioning into the principal's role, he said.

Board members voted to approve the tentative agreement with the Service Employees International Union.

Richard Cain, assistant superintendent, said the terms of the agreement were similar to those already approved for other district employees.

The board also approved the first reading of policy changes.

They included having one negotiating team for both the Hays-NEA and SEIU. The team will consist of the central office administrators, board president and vice president, and board attorney.

Many of the Kansas Association of School Boards policy changes involved "changing a word like shall to may or may to shall," Cain said.

Others were driven by legislative changes, he said.
