Approved adjustments for Hays USD 489

The Hays USD 489 Board of Education approved more than $1 million in budget adjustments Monday night in response to multiple reductions in state funding since the beginning of the year. They include:

Eliminate summer school -- $65,000 (approved in April)

6.0 certified staff reductions -- $318,000 (approved in April)

2.0 classified position reductions -- $45,000

Not fill in lieu of planning positions -- $25,000

Not fill department head positions -- $30,000

Eliminate out-of-district-paid field trips -- $20,000

15 percent reduction in assistant coaches -- $56,000

Eliminate curriculum write pay -- $5,000

Eliminate in lieu workbooks -- $11,000

Reduce overtime -- $40,000

Reduce one copier per building -- $15,000

Reduce lunch and playground supervision non-teacher pay -- $40,000

Reduce crossguards and miscellaneous pay -- $20,000

Eliminate National School Board Association dues -- $4,000

Eliminate Smoky Hill Service Center dues -- $8,000 (approved in January)

Eliminate professional development -- #27,000

3.5 custodial staff reductions -- $106,000

2.0 certified staff reductions -- $100,000

Increase K-12 workbook/material fees, exempting free lunch -- $175,100

Reduce Substitute teacher pay and eliminate long-term substitute rates -- $30,000

Total: $1,140,000
