Bowling ‘party’ to raise funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters
By RANDY GONZALES
There still are some spots available to form teams for Thursday’s bowling fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County.
One of five fundraisers each year, Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be Thursday at Centennial Lanes, 2400 Vine. Teams of no more than five people are asked to sign up pledges to raise money, then bowl Thursday. There is a noon slot for business people to bowl. Then bowling resumes at 5:30 p.m.; matches can bowl at that time also. Free pizza will be provided. For more information or to sign up a team, call Big Brothers Big Sisters at (785) 625-6672.
“It’s just a party,” said Nancy Jeter, executive director of BBBS of Ellis County.
Bowl for Kids’ Sake is one of five BBBS fundraisers each year.
“Funding is always a top priority, because we’re not a federally funded agency,” Jeter said. “We apply for grants and do fundraisers throughout the year, rely on contributions from individuals and businesses to fund our program here.”
BBBS has approximately 150 matches, with approximately 40 more matches needed, Jeter said. She said there are benefits to being matched.
“Once kids are matched, their grades improve, they have their relationships improve with teachers, with their parents, with kids on the playground,” Jeter said. “They gain in self confidence.”
