Breakfast kicks off 100th
The Wheatland District of the Coronado Area Council of Boy Scouts of America wants the public to help it celebrate Boy Scouts' 100th anniversary.
The Coronado Council covers 32 counties in northwest and north central Kansas.
About 10 percent of the 6,000 scouts in that council, whose headquarters is in Salina, are located in six area counties -- Ellis, Trego, Gove, Russell, Rooks and Osborne -- that make up the Wheatland District.
February is the traditional anniversary month of scouting, so the Coronado Council is sponsoring a celebration kickoff breakfast from 6:45 to 8 a.m. Feb. 18.
The breakfast, free to the public, will be held in the Ballroom of Fort Hays State University's Memorial Union.
Guest speaker will be Skip Yowell, co-founder of JanSport backpacks and outdoor gear and will be giving out some books and gear at the event.
Yowell spent his early years in Grainfield and Russell in western Kansas and graduated in 1964 from Great Bend High School.
While the meal is free, reservations still to be made by Feb. 12.
Those interested in attending should contact Carol Harfmann, council president, either by phone at (785) 625-7675 or by e-mail at charfmann@sbcglobal.net.
