After 32 years of service with UPS, Mike Peters finally has retired.
However, he won't have a lot of spare time on his hands.
Alongside his wife, Diana, and two other business partners, Peters now is co-owner of Changes -- a new local business that offers an automated workout regimen.
"I think people will see the results they can get, and I think it will go over real well," Peters said of his new business.
Changes, which will open Monday, is home to VIP Complex, an automated exercise technology that has been available for use in the United States for only about two years, said co-owner Glenda Schaffer, who will be in business with the couple and her husband, Terry.
Employees have completed a week of training and certification in Tulsa, Okla., and four licensed professionals, including Schaffer, will administer the treatments.
The technology is not new, however. It's been certified for use in Italy for about 30 years, she said.
The Hays location, at 2707 Vine, Suite 5, is the first of its kind to open in Kansas, with about 70 chain locations in the country, she said.
The business is home to two body system machines, which can provide a variety of treatments. The machines are designed to help with toning, firming and inch reduction, she said.
The machines also yield quick results -- 25 minutes of abdomen treatment equals about 1,000 sit-ups, Schaffer said.
"Everybody wants a quick fix, and this is a quick fix," she said. "That's our society now."
The system can be used as a jump-start to an exercise or dietary regimen, and it can be regularly used for long-lasting results. Muscle memory usually is retained after about 10 sessions, and maintenance appointments also help make changes permanent, she said.
The machine includes a chromotherapy system, which uses different wavelengths of light to stimulate or slow down metabolic processes. A spectrum of light, that does not include UV rays, can help reduce excess fat or water retention, and the appearance of cellulite, skin aging and acne.
Changes also boasts a VIP Total Face system, which is intended to be an alternative for a face-lift procedure. The machine can reduce the appearance of facial lines and acne, and improves facial circulation, she said.
"It enhances the beauty of your face and helps with circulation," Schaeffer said. "You'll have a radiant glow afterwards because your circulation is good."
A fourth machine, the XLR8, soon will be installed to serve as a virtual exercise machine, burning calories while clients stand still. About 10 minutes on the machine is equivalent to running about 4 miles, she said.
Each treatment session will be one hour long, and will include a variety of treatments to target specific areas for improvement.
Changes of Hays also boasts a line of body care products imported from Italy, including massage oils and anti-aging creams.
Nutrition counseling will be part of the package, and clients will be encouraged to eat well and drink plenty of water to supplement the treatments.
And before treatment begins, clients are required to complete a body composition analysis, which will help the client and professionals determine what areas need specific treatments.
"They can't just come in and say, 'Get this taken care of,' " Schaffer said. "We've got to find out what the composition of their body is before we can really serve their purpose."
