Changes to an abandoned vehicle ordinance will be a topic at tonight's Hays City Commission work session.

The meeting, which was rescheduled from Thursday night due to the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet, will be at 6:30 p.m. at city hall.

The driving force behind the request is disposal of bicycles, according to City Manager Toby Dougherty's meeting memo. While a few abandoned bicycles collected by the Hays Police Department are claimed quickly, most of them are abandoned and go unclaimed.

"The way the current ordinance is written, it is very difficult for the police department to dispose of these bicycles," Dougherty's memo said.

A few years ago, an auction company was hired to dispose of the bicycles, but it was found the city paid more for the auction service than was made on the bicycles.

A suggestion to have the bicycles restored and redistributed to persons in need by the Kansas Department of Corrections will be discussed by commissioners.

Other agenda items include:

* Short-term stormwater maintenance projects and long-term outlook and plans for stormwater utility.

* Residential tiered stormwater rates.

* Finance/city clerk's office front counter remodel.
