City commission to discuss simplifying fireworks rules

Printer-friendly version

In an effort to simplify fireworks rules, the Hays City Commission will discuss hours and days for fireworks during the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 1507 Main.

In 2005, the city reviewed its fireworks code, and for the first time in years, allowed "safe and sane" fireworks to be shot off within city limits. The city permitted fireworks from June 27 to July 5.

Currently, however, commissioners are searching for a way to make the city's fireworks dates the same as the county's dates. Generally, the county decides mid-June if fireworks will be permissible, depending on the amount of rain received.

Other items for consideration include:

* Commercial improvement awards to Cedar Lodge Dental Center, Hess Clinic, Maytag Home Appliance Center and Sternberg Museum of Natural History.

* Mayoral appointment of Errol Wuertz to the Airport Advisory Committee and Debra Staab to the Hays Housing Authority Board.

* R9 Ranch finances and EQUIP program.

* Expanding the Hays Recreation Commission to include additional fitness facilities.

* The final plat of Tallgrass Third Addition.
