Crane tours will be this month

10/18/2013

HOISINGTON -- The Kansas Wetlands Education Center will offer two free crane tours, starting at 5:30 p.m., Oct. 27 and 29 on Cheyenne Bottoms.

Led by members of the KWEC staff, the tours are designed to provide a look at two of autumn's spectacular journeys -- migration of sandhill and whooping cranes. The sight and sound of tens of thousands of cranes coming into the marsh to roost overnight is an unforgettable experience.

There's also a chance whooping cranes, one of the rarest and most striking of North American birds, might be present as the migration is underway.

The tours take place in conjunction with the Shafer Memorial Art Gallery's Choreography of Cranes Art Show that runs through Oct. 31.

To reserve a seat or for more information, call KWEC at (877) 243-9268. There are a limited number of seats. In the event of bad weather or a lack of cranes, tour participants will be notified of cancellation.
