ELLIS -- Local author Frisco Sullivan had a lot of doubters about his ability to write a novel.
After all, he failed English in both high school and college.
However, Sullivan is proving those people wrong after the June release of his second book, "Honor with a Vengeance II: The Crimson Brigade."
"I've got an idea of how it's supposed to go, but I really don't think word-for-word how it's going to go," Sullivan said. "I just start typing, and it just kind of writes itself."
Sullivan will be signing copies of the latest installment in the "Honor with a Vengeance" series from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hastings, 3300 Vine.
The first book, "Honor with a Vengeance," was published in 2006, eight years after Sullivan finished writing it.
"It took four months (to write), but I wasn't getting any support from anybody," he said. After searching the Internet for publishers that weren't going to wipe out his bank account, Sullivan settled on PublishAmerica.
After a lackluster experience with the company, he saved up $700 to have his second book published by AuthorHouse.
AuthorHouse has allowed Sullivan more guidance with his work and more freedom, even allowing him to design the cover of "The Crimson Brigade."
"It's not 100 percent like I thought it'd be, but it's the basic concept," Sullivan said.
"The Crimson Brigade" continues the saga of Jack Brown as he tries to stop a group of terrorists from taking over the world. Sullivan created the character of Brown as a person he would want to be.
Sullivan already has started work on his third book, which he hopes to have published next year.
"The next one's about Indonesia, so I had to find out about the culture, the languages, the food, the atmosphere," Sullivan said.
Many of the events in the books come from Sullivan's law enforcement background. He was a police officer in Liberal and Scott City and a deputy sheriff for Trego County before going to work for the Greater Western Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in WaKeeney.
"During police reports, I learned how to write in chronological events," Sullivan said. "I'm hoping (book sales) pick up enough I can do it full time."
I am not self published, I paid for it through a company, and if you think anyone can write a book I suggest ytou try.
