Three die in collision with semi near Smith Center

SMITH CENTER — Three people died Monday afternoon in an accident 4 miles east of Smith Center on U.S. Highway 36.

According to information from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Oris Marrs Jr., 52, Richard G. Fannin, 47, and Regina D. Cornsilk, 42, all of Smith Center, died at the scene of the accident.

The wreck occurred when the 2001 Chevrolet Crewcab driven by Marrs was westbound and crossed the center line, striking an eastbound Freightliner semi driven by Richard P. Renner Jr., 43, Mesa, Ariz. Renner was transported to Smith County Memorial Hospital for injuries.

Cornsilk was wearing a seat belt, and Marrs and Fannin were not, according to the KHP report. The report did not indicate whether Renner was wearing a seat belt.
