Thirty faculty and staff members at Fort Hays State University will be notified by the end of next week that their positions might not exist during the 2009-10 school year.

Due to budget cuts, FHSU President Edward H. Hammond announced today at least 30 positions could be on the chopping block, depending on a final budget decision from the state Legislature.

Of those positions, 15 are vacant and have not been filled due to a hiring freeze. Most of the five classified and five unclassified positions that will receive notice are in the Division of Student Affairs. Hammond said those positions are being redesigned, most to become 10- or 11-month positions, rather than 12-month positions.

"Some of these decisions probably would have occurred anyway over time because we have seen a significant decline in our on-campus enrollment," Hammond said.

Five temporary faculty positions also could be cut to deal with state budget cuts.
Hammond said no cuts would be made to tenure track faculty positions.

In Hammond's address to campus today, he also outlined the summer work schedule. Employees will work 10-hour days Monday through Thursday beginning May 26. If employees cannot or choose not to work 10-hour days, they can either take vacation or reduce their number of working hours and amount of pay.
