With the filing deadline for the April election only two days away, the roster of candidates filing for local offices is looking sparse.
Only one candidate, Kathleen Fischer, has filed for USD 489 Board of Education. Three at-large seats for four-year terms on the USD 489 board are open.
The three USD 489 positions up for election are held by Richard Kraemer, Sharon Befort and Alan Moore.
Hays City Commission, similarly, has received only one candidate filing. Shaun Musil filed for one of the three positions available in the April election.
The three positions are occupied by Mayor Troy Hickman, Ron Mellick and Eber Phelps, who was appointed to serve the remainder of Barbara Wasinger's term.
The filing deadline is noon Tuesday.
Candidates who wish to run for open board of education positions must file with the Ellis County election officer. For city government positions, candidates can file at their city clerk's office. Each city commission filing must be accompanied by a $10 filing fee, or by petition.
Any school district elector can petition to be a candidate by filing a petition signed by at least 50 electors residing in the school district, or by filing a declaration of intent and paying a $5 filing fee. No candidate can withdraw from candidacy after the filing date.
Ellis filings
Three positions are up for election on the Ellis USD 388 Board of Education. Jerry Pfeifer, incumbent, is the only individual to file for a seat on the board.
Two candidates, Lyle Johnston, council member, and incumbent David R. McDaniel, have filed for mayor of Ellis. Three candidates, Terry Redetzke, Brian Raub and Jolene Niernberger, have filed for the three available spots on city council. Raub and Niernberger currently serve on the council.
Victoria filings
Victoria USD 432 board has three four-year positions and one unexpired two-year term open. No one has filed for the positions.
Three council members and the mayor position are open. Curtis B. Unrein, incumbent, has filed for mayor. Leroy Schmidtberger, incumbent, has filed for a council seat.
