Fireworks banned in Hays
The use and sale of fireworks within Hays city limits has been banned for 2012 by Mayor Troy Hickman.
His decision, announced in a statement Friday afternoon, came on the heels of discussions with city staff and other city commissioners.
“This is not a decision I am happy to make but feel compelled to make in order to protect the residents and property of Hays,” he said.
Fireworks previously were authorized for use July 2, 3 and 4.
“The city commission and staff have received an inordinate amount of contact from residents of Hays overwhelmingly supporting, encouraging and even demanding a ban on the sale and use of fireworks,” Hickman said.
The support for a ban on fireworks places the commission and city staff in a “no-win situation.” However, a ban on fireworks sale and use is the only prudent alternative, he said.
Vendors will be allowed to sell fireworks until the end of day Friday. Those violating the ban will be charged and prosecuted accordingly.
According to Hickman’s statement, the Wild West Festival fireworks show will be allowed to continue with “great precaution.”
