Golden Q regular Norm Owings has not made any decisions on where he will spend his time after he finishes playing golf.

Owings temporarily will be forced to relocate, as the Golden Q bar and grill will close for four to six weeks for renovations beginning Monday.

"I don't know yet," Owings said. "We are still talking about that. We like to play Keno a little bit. My friends and I have been saying, 'Is there another place?' "

The Golden Q, 809 Ash, will be nearly doubling in size, and the interior will be changed drastically.

"The only thing I think I worry about is that a lot of people like the old Q," said Jenna Herman, who co-owns the Golden Q with her husband, Danny. "I don't want it to be so different that they don't feel like it is the same Q."

The dining area will fill the eastern half of the building, while the pool tables will be located on the western half of the building.

The kitchen will be enlarged, as another grill will be added.

"It seems like the kitchen is going to be about 10 times bigger than it is now," she said. "Right now, it is just a little hallway."

The bar will be moved to the center of the building and will be horseshoe shaped, and the floor will be ripped up and replaced by an acid-stained concrete floor.

A small stage for bands will be located near the back door on the southern side of the Golden Q, and a patio will be added to the west of the building. Herman said she plans to have a washer toss game located on the patio that will be free for people to use.

The bar will feature a blizzard cooling system for the kegs, keeping the beer at a constant 29 degrees.

"We will have the coldest draw beer in town," she said. "It will be super cold beer."

Additional items will be put on the menu. More TVs will be added, and the bathrooms also will be relocated and expanded.

Herman said the primary reason for the renovations would be to make it more efficient.

Due to a lack of space, patrons would have to wait long periods for seating and for their food.

"We have needed to expand for a long time," she said. "On Saturdays, people come in here, and they are in here for an hour waiting for food. One, we don't have the space on the grill, and two, we don't have the space for enough tables."

The renovation process began last November by buying the lot to the west of the Golden Q and demolishing the house located on the lot. When the weather improved, the concrete foundation was poured, and two weeks ago, crews began building the addition.

Employees were notified about the remodeling months in advance so they could make alternative plans for revenue. Full-time employees were given the option to work on the remodeling of the Golden Q, such as cleaning and moving items.

"The ones I'm really focused on are the full-time people, because all they do work-wise is this," Herman said.

Financially, Herman said they made themselves ready for a long layoff in business, but missing the Wild West Festival would hurt. However, she said it was necessary to ensure the bar and grill would be open in time for the start of the school year.

"(Wild West Fest) is a big weekend for us, but when we planned it out, we thought we needed that extra week. ... We have been planning and put back some money to pay the bills that will keep coming in," she said.

Herman said a lot of customers were distraught when they found out about the Golden Q temporarily closing down.

"I have heard a lot of people saying, 'What are we going to do for a month? Where are we going to go? I guess I'll have to cook at home,' " she said.

However, Owings said he will be happy to see the finished product.

"It is great," Owings said. "I am for progress always."
