Honore Antonio Lira, 29, McCook, Neb.; Gonzalo Maldono-Gonzalez, 24, Albequerque, N.M.; and Domingo Alvarado, 34, Leoti, were in the westbound shoulder of Greeley County Road D fixing a flat tire on a 1994 Buick Century about 7:20 p.m. Another car, a 1992 Chevrolet Lumina, was also in the westbound shoulder with its headlights shining on the Century.
Elmer Holman, 79, Tribune, was westbound when he hit both vehicles and ran over Alvarado, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
First of all if he was or wasn't legal in this country this is a human we are talking about. A man who left three small children without a father and a house wife without a husband. A beautifull baby girl, 8 months (at the time) So does being legal help in any of this? We are talking about someones life, setting aside any race, color, language or legal status. So please have some compassion and leave your hurtfull comments to those who are living, committing crimes day by day. Now on getting the facts straight...? The lights of both vehicles were on. 79 yr old driver stated that on the police report. So you would think he would have slowed down and at least thought of stopping if he didn't know where those lights were coming from. right? There were no brake marks showing that this man even considered stopping from going 50-55mpr. Look we can sit here and discuss the situation and we will never really find out what went wrong. Now think about what does the wife do or say to confort her children when they ask for daddy? Keep this family in your prayers. Help all you can if possible. God wants us to be more like him, loving, kind, giving and forgiving. Don't judge and be rude. God bless!

Get your facts straight: 11/12/2009
I drive this 13 mile road everyday it is not wide enough to just change lanes. Plus it was at night they were changing a tire in the middle of the road with NO lights or flashers on. Plus with the dirt in the air from the semi in front of him. They are lucky they all didn't die.

No More Exemptions: 11/11/2009
First of all all truck drivers are required to have a medical card and they do test your visions etc... unless you are farm use only, and not for hire. Then you are exempt and are not required to have a CDL or DOT Physical Card. Maybe the answer should be ALL who operate a semi should have a Medical Card and CDL... Farmers who haul off the field are not required to run a log, so fatigue is a factor. Also you just don't turn one of these trucks on a dime...Not only are they top heavy and easy to roll, they are also side heavy.....Swerving one on dirt is like chasing a snake at times.

He was probably a farmer. They usually dont drive trucks much and are not very good a driving them. I see this everyday as a truck driver.

Agreed; Semi's are hard to control, so why do we let people of this age drive semi's

To Surprised: 11/11/2009
Maybe you should try driving a truck and so you know what it is like. It ain't that easy to just swerve to miss something or someone in a truck. They roll a whole hell of a lot easier than a pickup or SUV.

An older driver pulled out in front of me - not seeing me causing me to wreck, I know this can happen to anyone at any age, but it seems that there should be an age that the drivers need to be retested to keep their licences

Semi Drivers: 11/11/2009
I seems that wherever you are semi driver do no get over for vehicles on the side of the road. I does not take that much to switch lanes. I am surprised it does not happen more often.
